Department of Child DevelopmentAcademic Evaluation System
Students’ performance in courses and other academic activities is assessed in accordance with the İzmir University of Economics Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations. Within the scope of these regulations, students are required to take both midterm examinations and a final examination each semester. At least one midterm examination is mandatory in every semester. Midterm and final examinations are conducted at the times and locations announced by the university.
At the end of the first academic year, students may take courses from upper semesters and are promoted to second-year status if they achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 1.50. For graduation, students are required to achieve a CGPA of at least 2.00. Students in the Child Development Program must successfully complete a total of eight elective courses, at least three of which must be field-specific electives coded as CG.
Students who are academically unsuccessful may, with the approval of their academic advisor and without exceeding the normal course load, take the following courses in order to improve their CGPA:
Additionally, students with academic difficulties may continue their studies with a reduced course load upon advisor approval. Semesters in which courses are repeated are included in the maximum duration of study.
For each course, students are awarded a final letter grade by the instructor at the end of the semester. The grade scale, coefficients, and status definitions are presented below:
| Score | Letter Grade | Coefficient | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | AA | 4.00 | Successful |
| 85–89 | BA | 3.50 | Successful |
| 80–84 | BB | 3.00 | Successful |
| 75–79 | CB | 2.50 | Passed |
| 70–74 | CC | 2.00 | Passed |
| 65–69 | DC | 1.50 | Conditionally Passed |
| 60–64 | DD | 1.00 | Conditionally Passed |
| 50–59 | FD | 0.50 | Failed |

To pass a course, associate and undergraduate students must obtain at least a DD/S grade, master’s students at least a CC grade, and doctoral students at least a CB grade.
Additional Grade Definitions
The I (Incomplete) grade is assigned to students who, due to a valid reason accepted by the course instructor, cannot complete the required course requirements by the end of the semester or summer school. The I grade must be converted into a letter grade within one week following the submission of final grades. In exceptional cases, this period may be extended until at least two weeks before the start of the next semester’s course registration period, upon recommendation of the relevant department chair and approval of the academic board. Any I grade not converted within the required period is automatically converted to FF or U.
The S (Satisfactory) grade is awarded for successful completion of non-credit courses.
The U (Unsatisfactory) grade is awarded for unsuccessful completion of non-credit courses.
The P (Pass – Continuing) grade is given in non-GPA courses lasting more than one semester, provided that the student fulfills the required academic activities for the relevant semester.
The NP (Not Passed – Continuing) grade is assigned when such requirements are not met.
The EX (Exempt) grade is given to students exempted from certain curriculum courses.
The NI (Not Included in GPA) grade indicates courses that are not included in the GPA calculation of the student’s program. These courses appear on the transcript with their letter grades but are not counted toward program requirements.
The W (Withdrawn) grade is used when a student withdraws from a course after the add/drop period, within the first ten weeks of the semester, with advisor and instructor approval. Students cannot withdraw from courses in the first two semesters, repeated courses required for graduation, or courses previously assigned a W or excluded from GPA calculation. A student may withdraw from a maximum of one course per semester (including double major, minor, or certificate programs), up to two courses in total during an associate degree and up to six courses during a bachelor’s degree. Withdrawn courses must be retaken when next offered. For exchange students, withdrawal procedures may be implemented with the approval of the International Relations Office, and W restrictions do not apply.
The NA (Not Attended) grade is assigned to students who fail to meet attendance requirements, do not fulfill course requirements, or do not participate in any examinations during the semester, thereby losing the right to take the final exam. The NA grade is treated as 0.00 in GPA calculations.
