    Exam Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students’ performance in courses and other academic activities is assessed in accordance with the İzmir University of Economics Associate and Undergraduate Education and Training Regulations. Within the scope of these regulations, students are subject not only to midterm examinations but also to a final examination each semester. At least one midterm examination is mandatory in each academic term. Midterm and final examinations are conducted at the locations and dates announced by the university.

At the end of the first academic year, students may take courses from the upper class and be promoted to the second year provided that their cumulative grade point average (GPA) reaches at least 1.50. For graduation, students are required to raise their cumulative GPA to at least 2.00. In addition to compulsory courses, students of the Elderly Care Programme must successfully complete a total of nine elective courses, including at least three YB-coded field elective courses.

Students who are academically unsuccessful may, with the approval of their academic advisor and without exceeding the standard course load, take the following types of courses in order to improve their GPA:

    • Courses they have previously failed,
    • Courses from lower semesters that they have not yet taken,
    • Courses from their own level that they have not yet taken,
    • Conditionally passed courses,
    • Courses they wish to improve their grades in,
    • Up to a maximum of 12 ECTS credits from upper-level courses.

In addition, with advisor approval, students may continue their studies with a reduced course load. Semesters in which courses are repeated are included in the calculation of the maximum duration of study.

For each course taken, one of the following letter grades is assigned by the instructor as the final course grade. The grade points and their equivalents on a 100-point scale are presented below. Each letter grade also has an equivalent ECTS grade.

Score Range Letter Grade Grade Point Status
    90–100 AA 4.00 Pass
    85–89 BA 3.50 Pass
    80–84 BB 3.00 Pass
    75–79 CB 2.50 Pass
    70–74 CC 2.00 Pass
    65–69 DC 1.50 Conditionally Pass
    60–64 DD 1.00 Conditionally Pass
    50–59 FD 0.50 Fail
49 and below FF 0.00 Fail

To successfully pass a course, associate and undergraduate students must obtain at least a DD/S grade, while master’s students require at least a CC grade, and doctoral students require at least a CB grade.

In addition, the following grading symbols may be assigned:

    • I (Incomplete): Assigned to students who, due to a valid reason accepted by the course instructor, cannot complete the required course requirements by the end of the semester or summer school. The I grade must be converted into a letter grade within one week after the final grade submission period. Under special circumstances, this period may be extended until at least two weeks before the start of course registration for the next semester, subject to departmental recommendation and faculty board approval. Otherwise, the I grade is automatically converted to FF or U.
    • S (Satisfactory): Given to students who successfully complete non-credit courses.
    • U (Unsatisfactory): Given to students who fail non-credit courses.
    • P (Pass – Continuing): Assigned to students who successfully fulfil the academic requirements in courses extending beyond one semester and which are not included in GPA calculations.
    • NP (Fail – Continuing): Assigned to students who do not fulfil the required academic performance in such courses.
    • EX (Exempt): Given to students exempted from certain courses in the curriculum.
    • NI (Not Included in GPA): Used for courses taken outside the student’s programme requirements; the grade appears on the transcript but is not included in GPA calculations.
    • W (Withdrawn): Assigned when a student withdraws from a course within the first ten weeks of the semester with advisor recommendation and instructor approval. Restrictions apply regarding withdrawal eligibility and limits on the number of withdrawals throughout the programme.
    • NA (Absent): Assigned to students who fail to meet attendance requirements, do not fulfil course obligations, and/or do not participate in any examinations. The NA grade is treated as 0.00 in GPA calculations.
