Teaching Aims

The primary objective of the Elderly Care Programme at the İzmir University of Economics Vocational School of Health Services is to train qualified healthcare professionals who possess the fundamental knowledge, skills, and competencies required to provide care for elderly individuals; who contribute positively to the health and quality of life of older adults; who are able to communicate effectively with patients, their relatives, and healthcare professionals; who follow current technological developments in the implementation of elderly care services; and who demonstrate teamwork, lifelong learning skills, and analytical thinking abilities. The programme also aims to educate individuals who are capable of developing solutions, are aware of their legal responsibilities, and adhere to professional ethical values.

In line with these objectives, students graduating from the programme will be able to achieve the following defined Educational Objectives (EOs):

EO 1. Describe the ageing process and its effects on the physical, mental, and emotional health of older adults.

EO 2. Demonstrate effective communication skills with elderly individuals, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.

EO 3. Apply strategies to ensure a safe and supportive environment for older adults, taking into account their activities of daily living.

EO 4. Explain the legal responsibilities and ethical principles related to elderly care.

EO 5. Continuously improve caregiving skills and approaches in line with updated theoretical and practical knowledge.

EO 6. Develop problem-solving, critical thinking, reasoning, synthesis, and evaluation skills.

EO 7. Utilise current technologies and equipment related to elderly care to meet the potential care needs of older individuals.
