    Exam Regulations, Assessment and Grading

    Student Assessment and Grading System

Student achievement in courses and other academic activities is evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the İzmir University of Economics Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations. Within the scope of these regulations, students are subject to both midterm examinations and a final examination. At least one midterm examination is mandatory in each academic semester. Midterm and final examinations are conducted at the time and place determined by the university.

At the end of the first academic year, students who achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 1.50 are eligible to take upper-level courses and are classified as second-year students. For graduation, students are required to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. In addition, students in the Medical Documentation and Secretarial Program must successfully complete a total of eight elective courses, including at least two TDS-coded field elective courses, in addition to compulsory courses.

Students who fail courses may, with advisor approval and provided that they do not exceed the normal course load, take the following types of courses:

    • Courses they have failed,
    • Courses from lower semesters that they have not yet taken,
    • Courses from their current level that they have not yet taken,
    • Conditionally passed courses,
    • Courses they wish to retake to improve their grades,
    • Up to a maximum of 12 ECTS credits of upper-level courses.

Additionally, with advisor approval, students who are academically unsuccessful may continue their studies with a reduced course load. Repeated courses are included in the calculation of the maximum duration of study.

A student’s performance in a course is determined by the instructor based on midterm exams, final examinations, coursework, and attendance, and is expressed as a letter grade. The corresponding grade scale is as follows:

    Score Letter Grade Coefficient Status
    90–100 AA 4.00 Pass
    85–89 BA 3.50 Pass
    80–84 BB 3.00 Pass
    75–79 CB 2.50 Pass
    70–74 CC 2.00 Pass
    65–69 DC 1.50 Conditionally Pass
    60–64 DD 1.00 Conditionally Pass
    50–59 FD 0.50 Fail
49 and below FF 0.00 Fail

To be considered successful in a course, associate and undergraduate students must obtain at least a DD/S grade, master’s students at least a CC grade, and doctoral students at least a CB grade. In addition, the following applies to certain grades:

The NA (Non-Attendance) grade is assigned by the instructor to students who fail to meet attendance requirements and/or do not fulfill course-related obligations. The NA grade is treated as 0.00 in GPA calculations.

Grades not included in GPA calculations are as follows:

    • S (Satisfactory): awarded for successful completion of non-credit courses.
    • U (Unsatisfactory): awarded for failure in non-credit courses.
    • EX (Exempt): awarded to students exempted from certain courses in the curriculum.
    • I (Incomplete): awarded when a student, due to a valid reason accepted by the instructor, cannot complete course requirements by the end of the semester or summer term. The I grade must be converted into a letter grade within one week after grade submission. Under special circumstances, this period may be extended until at least two weeks before the start of the next semester’s course registration period, upon the recommendation of the department chair and approval of the relevant administrative board. If not converted in time, the I grade automatically becomes FF or U.
    • W (Withdrawn): assigned when a student withdraws from a course within the period specified in the academic calendar, with the approval of the academic advisor and the course instructor. Students are not permitted to withdraw from compulsory courses in the first two semesters of associate or undergraduate programs, from courses taken to improve grades, from repeated courses, or from courses previously assigned a W grade. First-year undergraduate students may withdraw only from elective general education courses included in their curriculum. Students may withdraw from at most one course per semester (including double major, minor, or certificate program courses), and a maximum of two courses throughout associate education and six courses throughout undergraduate education, with advisor and instructor approval. Exchange students studying under institutional agreements between the university and international partner institutions may withdraw from courses upon the recommendation of the Office of International Relations and instructor approval; in such cases, standard W grade rules do not apply.
