    Exam Regulations, Assessment and Grading

    Student Assessment System

Student performance in courses and other academic activities is evaluated in accordance with the İzmir University of Economics Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations. Within this framework, students are required to take both midterm examinations and a final examination in addition to in-semester assessments. At least one midterm examination is mandatory in each academic semester. Midterm and final examinations are held at the locations and dates announced by the university.

At the end of the first academic year, students who achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 1.50 are eligible to take upper-level courses and are classified as second-year students. For graduation, students must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. In addition, Medical Imaging Techniques Program students must successfully complete a total of 10 elective courses, including at least one TGT-coded field elective course, in addition to compulsory courses.

Students who are academically unsuccessful may, with advisor approval and provided that they do not exceed the normal course load, take the following courses in order to improve their GPA:

    • Courses they have failed,
    • Courses from lower semesters that they have not yet taken,
    • Courses from their current level that they have not yet taken,
    • Conditionally passed courses,
    • Courses they wish to retake to improve their grades,
    • Up to a maximum of 12 ECTS credits of upper-level courses.

Additionally, with advisor approval, students may continue their studies with a reduced course load. Repeated course periods are included in the calculation of the maximum duration of study.

For each course, a letter grade is assigned by the instructor at the end of the semester. The corresponding grading scale is as follows:

    Score Letter Grade Coefficient Status
    90–100 AA 4.00 Pass
    85–89 BA 3.50 Pass
    80–84 BB 3.00 Pass
    75–79 CB 2.50 Pass
    70–74 CC 2.00 Pass
    65–69 DC 1.50 Conditionally Pass
    60–64 DD 1.00 Conditionally Pass
    50–59 FD 0.50 Fail
49 and below FF 0.00 Fail

To successfully pass a course, associate and undergraduate students must obtain at least a DD/S grade, master’s students at least a CC grade, and doctoral students at least a CB grade.

The following grading statuses are also defined:

    • I (Incomplete): Assigned when a student, due to a valid reason accepted by the instructor, cannot complete course requirements by the end of the semester or summer session. The grade must be converted into a letter grade within one week after grade submission. In exceptional cases, this period may be extended until at least two weeks before the start of the next semester’s course registration period upon departmental recommendation and faculty board approval. Otherwise, it automatically converts to FF or U.
    • S (Satisfactory): Given for successful completion of non-credit courses.
    • U (Unsatisfactory): Given for unsuccessful completion of non-credit courses.
    • P (Pass - Continuing): Given for courses extending beyond one semester when required academic progress is satisfactorily completed.
    • NP (Fail - Continuing): Given when required academic progress is not satisfactorily completed in such courses.
    • EX (Exempt): Assigned to students exempted from certain courses.
    • NI (Not Included): Indicates courses not included in GPA calculations but shown on the transcript with the earned grade. Such courses are not counted toward the student’s curriculum requirements.
    • W (Withdrawn): Assigned when a student withdraws from a course within the first ten weeks of the semester with advisor and instructor approval. Students cannot withdraw from first-year courses, repeated courses, or courses previously assigned a W grade. Withdrawal limits apply per program level. A withdrawn course must be retaken in its next offering. Exchange students are exempt from standard W rules under international agreements.
    • NA (Non-Attendance): Assigned to students who fail to meet attendance requirements, do not fulfill course obligations, or do not participate in any exams during the semester. NA is treated as 0.00 in GPA calculations.
