HEART NEEDS A TLC
It was reported that approximately 2 million people in Turkey suffered from heart failure, and people needed to watch their sodium, fat, and sugar intakes. The experts reminded that proper nutrition decreased the rate of diseases, and that people needed to avoid obesity, keep their blood pressure under control, and exercise regularly.
Melahat Kızıl, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, indicated that 39.8% of deaths in Turkey were caused by circulatory system diseases, and she said, “Prevalence of heart attack is remarkably high in our country. 20% of individuals die of heart attack on the way to the hospital and 10% die at the hospital. A heart attack occurs when one or more of coronary arteries become blocked. Factors such as smoking, poor dietary habits, obesity, overweight, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, chronic stress, hypertension, diabetes are among the causes of a heart attack. Therefore, healthy eating and exercise should become big part of our lives.”
What to Do During a Heart Attack?
Kızıl stated that 112 emergency services should be notified and she made the following recommendations:
“Call 112 immediately. Make sure the victim stops all physical activity and lies down, loosen clothing around the chest area, and remain calm until the ambulance arrives. Thanks to emergency service system 112 and paramedics, there was a remarkable decrease in deaths caused by heart attack. First-aid training and raising awareness of public about recognizing and responding to heart attack will decrease the death rates.”
