BE MINDFUL OF YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH WHEN SHOPPING FOR SCHOOL!
It's that time of year again when parents face the agony of back to school shopping as the schools are about to open in less than two weeks. The experts state that it is of utmost importance for uniforms, schoolbags, stationeries to be checked whether they fit the standards when it comes to children’s health.
Dr. Funda İfakat Tengiz, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, stated that both students and their parents were in a rush. She said, "So many supplies, mainly school bag, pencil case, notebooks, pens, erasers, colouring pencils are on the supply list. It is important to be conscious consumers when shopping. Therefore, parents need to make a supplies list first. They should check whether the supplies are in accordance with safety standards. Products that are in accordance with safety standards may cause serious health concerns. Heavy metals may have serious effects on the nervous system, while organic chemicals cause immune system diseases and harmful chemicals cause diseases such as cancer.”
‘Don’t let your school bag ruin your spine!’
Dr. Tengiz pointed out that when shopping for school supplies, children’s height, weight, and age should be taken into consideration as carrying heavy and unbalanced weight might cause spinal, muscular, and joint diseases in children who have not yet completed their growth. She said that especially when shopping for backpacks, parents needed to pay attention to the size of the backpacks so that children can carry it without hurting themselves. Dr. Tengiz said, "School bag itself should be lightweight with large straps where child can carry over both shoulders, not one only. Children who carry oversized bags are faced with major spinal problems and back pains.”
‘Shoes and uniforms are also important’
Dr. Tengiz suggested that shoe selection is just as much important. She said that ill-fitting shoes may cause ingrown toenails, hammer toes, and callus. Dr. Tengiz, made the following recommendations to parents:
"When shopping for uniforms or outfits, cotton and wool for winter should be opted for since these natural materials balance the body heat as they prevent sweating because they absorb more. It helps reduce diseases as cold and flu. Parents also should check for colouring agents in products, and even if they contain, they need to make sure non-cancerous dyes have been used.”
